Jim Caldwell, who worked as a typesetter in 1960, became part-owner in 1965. News Publishing Co. of Rome, Ga. pur-chased the newspaper from Caldwell in November 1990. Times-Journal Inc. acquired the newspaper in February 2015.

The Walker County Messenger is the county's oldest continuous business, hav-ing published its first newspaper on July 27, 1877. The first edition was four pag-es and a subscription cost $1 per year. Capt. Augustus McHan was the editor. The newspaper, located at the time on the east side of the downtown square in LaFayette, has undergone a number of changes in management and own-ership. In 2009 the newspaper moved to its current location. Times-Journal Inc. acquired the newspaper in February 2015.
